Assessment of analytical techniques for characterization of crystalline clopidogrel forms in patent applications BJPS
Lira,Luiz Marcelo; Lourenço,Alexandre Lopes; Neves,Guilherme Ferreira; Sousa,Valéria Pereira de; Rodrigues,Carlos Rangel; Cabral,Lúcio Mendes.
The aim of this study was to evaluate two important aspects of patent applications of crystalline forms of drugs: (i) the physicochemical characterization of the crystalline forms; and (ii) the procedure for preparing crystals of the blockbuster drug clopidogrel. To this end, searches were conducted using online patent databases. The results showed that: (i) the majority of patent applications for clopidogrel crystalline forms failed to comply with proposed Brazilian Patent Office guidelines. This was primarily due to insufficient number of analytical techniques evaluating the crystalline phase. In addition, some patent applications lacked assessment of chemical/crystallography purity; (ii) use of more than two analytical techniques is important; and (iii)...

Jesus,Caroline Regina de; I-Ching,Lee; Neiva,Teresinha de Jesus Carvalho; Vituri,Cidônia de Lourdes.
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative disease characterized by the presence of the Philadelphia chromosome (translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22), resulting in the formation of the hybrid BCR-ABL protein. Currently, the treatment of CML patients is performed with imatinib mesylate (IM), which promotes the elimination of leukemic cells by inhibiting the kinase activity of BCR-ABL. This study evaluated the effectiveness of IM by monitoring 22 CML patients in a chronic phase treated at the CEPON/SC with IM for a minimum follow-up period of two years. Cytogenetic Response (CR) and bone marrow biopsies (BMB) were evaluated before and after IM treatment. BMB were evaluated by detection of reticulin degree and vascularization. The results...

Assessment of in vitro methodologies to determine topical and transdermal delivery of the flavonoid quercetin BJPS
Vicentini,Fabiana Testa Moura de Carvalho; Georgetti,Sandra Regina; Bentley,Maria Vitória Lopes Badra; Fonseca,Maria José Vieira.
To be effective against the oxidative damages induced by UVB irradiation in the skin, the drug needs to release from the formulation in which it was incorporated and reach the skin layers where the ROS are generated. Thus, it is very important the development of a robust and sensitive methodology to extract and quantify in different skin layers the antioxidant agent delivered from topical formulations. Therefore, in the present work suitable methods to extract and quantify quercetin in skin samples and receptor phase after in vitro penetration studies were developed. The results demonstrated that the recovery from two different layers of skin, the SC and [E+D], using two different methods of quantification (DPPH• assay and HPLC, respectively), was 93.8 %...
